The position of Principal Firmware engineer leads projects within a team of hardware and software engineers, developing production software that runs on our four generations of OBD-II hardware devices. You'll be working on coding firmware features through to setting architecture for future devices and interfacing with a multitude of vendors, internal stakeholders and partners to execute existing projects. At Automatic, Principal Firmware Engineers work on a wide range of areas from low level hardware bring-up and debug through to algorithms (including vehicle safety critical products) and interfacing to our servers and mobile clients.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop firmware that runs on a variety of embedded systems including our OBD-II hardware adapters
Assist with hardware debugging including bus protocol debugging (I2C, SPI, UART and friends) and power management
Able to communicate clearly with internal customers and leadership.
Performs reviews with internal staff, ensuring standards and practices are maintained. Works with existing firmware engineers on projects where firmware is needed or required.
Develop and improve build systems, automated test and internal tools used to manage large scale firmware deployments
Responsible for firmware engineering documentation is updated and accurate. Including ensuring changes made by external resources, like vendors or contract system integrators.
Develop and triage manufacturing test in conjunction with our partners in China and Taiwan
Show technical leadership and be able to mentor other team members and peers.
Demonstrate excellent customer service skill while interacting with customers and team members
Specify, design and implement new firmware features for our core consumer experience
Work with QA to implement test plans for validating new features or tricky code changes
Ability to work with outside consultants and/or vendors, ensuring outcomes are achieved and standards maintained.
- Will supervise engineers
12+ years developing firmware for embedded devices
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience required. MSc is desired.
Highly proficient in "C" and good understanding of ARM assembly language
Demonstrated shipping of firmware into embedded devices for the consumer market
Requirements and General Skills:
Team player with excellent written and oral communication skills.
Work in an Agile S/W development environment
An understanding of software and hardware development processes
Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously in an organized and timely manner.
Interface with cross functional teams from design, through to product and engineering
Self-starter with creative problem solving skills and hunger to learn
Experience with Linux as a developer or a user
Ability to travel to manufacturing locations as applicable.
Must have legal right to work in the U.S.
Expertise in C/C++, object oriented methodologies and system software design concepts.
Familiar with non-traditional embedded languages (Python and Rust would be ideal)
Comfortable using a variety of oscilloscopes, JTAG/SWD debuggers, multi-meters and logic analyzers
A high-level of personal computer proficiency is required, including experience and familiarity with Linux as a developer or user and engineering software.
